Groundhogs, a marmot belonging to a group of large ground squirrels is what we celebrate every year on February 2nd. People of all ages await the moment that Punxsutawney Phil crawls out of his burrow, watching to see if there will be an early spring or if winter is still in the air. Also known as a woodchuck, these rodents feast on mainly wild grasses and other vegetation. Occasionally they will eat grubs, insects, and other small animals, making them omnivores. Groundhogs are one of the few species that enter a true state of hibernation during the winter. Their hibernation usually lasts from October until March or April. Groundhogs are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day. Yesterday morning Phil crawled out into the world and announced that spring is just around the corner.
